TPH Teacher Receives Prestigious Fellowship

The Potter’s House High School Social Studies Teacher, Tricia Kremke, was recently awarded the James Madison Memorial Fellowship for 2012.

James Madison Fellowships support the graduate study of American history by aspiring and experienced secondary school teachers of American history, American government, and social studies.

Named in honor of the fourth president of the United States and acknowledged “Father of the Constitution and Bill of Rights,” a James Madison Fellowship funds up to $24,000 of each Fellow’s course of study towards a master’s degree. That program must include a concentration of courses on the history and principles of the United States Constitution.

The 57 James Madison Fellows were selected in competition with applicants from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the nation’s island and trust territories. The fellowships are funded by income from a trust fund in the Treasury of the United States and from additional private gifts, corporate contributions, and foundation grants. Recipients are required to teach American history or social studies in a secondary school for at least one year for each year of fellowship support. The award is intended to recognize promising and distinguished teachers, to strengthen their knowledge of the origins and development of American constitutional government, and thus to expose the nation’s secondary school students to accurate knowledge of the nation’s constitutional heritage.

Founded by an Act of Congress in 1986, the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation is an independent agency of the executive branch of the federal government. (Taken from www.jamesmadison.gov.)

Congratulations Tricia!

Dutch Heritage Essay Contest

Made in China, Adopted Dutch, Born to be American
By: Ellianne Huizinga

On a particular day in March, March twenty-first to be exact, a boat (Maas Dam) was bringing immigrants from Groningen in the Netherlands to Hoboken, New Jersey. There was a very special passenger on this boat. When she had been in the old country she met a little boy in elementary school. The girl’s name was Frances or Franny (Feikje) and the boy’s name was Tony (Tonnis). Tony as a little boy liked to pick on Franny and especially enjoyed pulling on her hair. However, little did they know that their relationship would grow into the greatest love that anyone could have. It would be so great that once they were separated by Tony moving to America, Frances would follow three years later (1955). Frances left Thesinge, her home town, and her family alone. She didn’t know English but she was bound and determined to be with the man she loved, no matter what obstacles stood in the way. Guess who was standing there waiting for Frances when she got off that boat in Hoboken; Tony. After coming to America, Tony three years earlier, decided to join the United States Army in order to get his American citizenship. He had driven up from Fort Benning, Georgia to New Jersey so he could meet Frances and drive her to Michigan. The weather was terrible that day but nothing could change the happiness that the couple shared in their reunion after waiting three years.

Tony and Frances married August 23, 1956 and had three sons and a daughter. One of their sons named Jack grew up to marry a woman named Karen. Karen was also Dutch but not so directly connected to the culture. Jack and Karen Huizinga decided they wanted to adopt a baby girl from China. They adopted me on March 26, 1997 and I became an American citizen November 6, 1998. I look Chinese and have lived with that part of me at home. My grandparents are thoroughly Dutch and have therefore passed down many things involved in Dutch culture through their Dutch influence. I’ve lived the life I can remember in America.

Every time I look in the mirror or get a Made in China sticker put on me by my friends I know where I am from. At our house we have many Chinese decorations, celebrate Chinese New Year, and go to Heritage Camp to learn about our Chinese culture. At home I also have some Dutch culture in little things that I don’t even think about really. When I was adopted my parents gave me a blanket and while most people would call it a blanky, I call mine my doekje. My sister does the same with hers. Cheese is one of my favorite foods; my favorite type is gouda cheese, which is very Dutch. At the dinner table my dad sometimes shares stories of my grandparents in the Netherlands, him growing up with full on Dutch parents, and his visits to the old country. However, I feel the most Dutch at my grandma and grandpa’s house.

When I go to my grandparents’ house the first thing that assures you that you are in a Dutch home is my grandparents’ accent when they say hi to us. It is also very clear that family is important to them in that they always tell us how much they love us and how much we mean to them. On my birthday Grandma and Grandpa are always there after my dinner of pork roast, mashed potatoes with the drippings from the meat as gravy, and brussels sprouts. They always give gifts to my siblings when it is my birthday and vice versa because my grandpa managed his money well enough to have a comfortable retirement. He, as a Dutchman, managed his money and insurance well. My grandparents also made sure that they had money for the tithe when they went to church. They have been and still go twice on Sunday with a strong faith and love of God. This part of them has influenced me in my walk with Christ by setting a good example of what a Christian life looks like. God brought me to live in America and this is my home. But living in America makes me curious about both cultures and histories because in school you mainly learn about American history and not much of others’. I have grown up with three different perspectives and don’t know much about two of them. All of this makes me think of who I really am. Am I Chinese because of my appearance? Am I Dutch because of who my family is? Or am I American because of my location and memories of my history? Being Chinese, Dutch, or American is all fine but for where God is leading me I believe being all three heritages are necessary to my identity and who I will be because I am all three.

Varsity Boys Lose to Freedom Chr in Regular Season Finale

Recap:
The Varsity Boys basketball team was back in action on Tuesday, February 28th as they traveled to Hudsonville to take on Freedom Christian from the River Valley conference, falling 49-34. The loss gave the Pumas a 4-16 record for the season as they get ready for Districts next week vs. Tri-Unity. Freedom happened to be celebrating senior night and started the game on fire. PH Head Coach Ardrace Morris had this to say after the game, “The bad news is that we didn’t meet the emotional challenge posed by the seniors of Freedom. The good news, we out scored freedom in the fourth quarter 19-8 and gained some confidence going into our district match up against Tri Unity. We have worked hard this year to develop character and a style of play in the program and I commend our young team for meeting the challenge. There is still much work to do, but these young men have taken the first step by not quitting on the team or running from the expectations of a student athlete.”

Come out to support the Pumas on Monday, March 5th as PH battles Tri-Unity Christian in the District Quarterfinals at Freedom Christian High School.

Fruitport Calvary Strong Second Half Too Much for PH Varsity Boys Basketball

Recap:
The PH Varsity took a tough conference loss on Friday, December 16th, falling to Fruitport Calvary Christian by 15 points. Calvary took advantage of poor shooting from the three point line by the Pumas, sealing the victory late in the fourth quarter. The Pumas continued to learn how to share the ball and work as a unit on defense during the game; however, the shots were not falling. Coach Ardrace Morris had this to say after the game, “I want to commend the guys for their effort and hard work. The coaches and players would like to thank the great crowd for their support at home games so far this season. Also, congrats to the Junior Varsity for a tough win on Friday night despite the fact that the team is made up of mostly freshman. The young Pumas have really worked hard in practice and they continue to get better with each practice. Have a Merry Christmas and please pray for those who are less fortunate this holiday season.”

Boys Basketball Falls in Nail Biter in Opener vs. Martin

Recap:
The Varsity Boys Basketball team opened up their season Monday, December 5th at Jackson Park Middle School vs. Martin High School. The boys played hard to the very end, but came up short by the score of 45 – 41. The Pumas were led by Junior forward Damian Marsh who finished with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 blocks on the night. After a closely fought second quarter, the Pumas lead at the half 25 – 21. However, Martin came out strong in the 3rd quarter to take a 39-34 lead heading into the 4th. In the fourth quarter, the Pumas turned up the defense holding the Clippers to only six points the entire quarter, but a few critical turnovers hurt and they were not able to overcome the late deficit. Despite the loss, the Varsity team has four sophomores who showed a lot of heart and character in their first Varsity game.

TPH held possession to start the game and put Algoma on their heels. However, Algoma answered with a great individual effort to score the first goal. The Pumas responded with many chances of their own as the game remained tight thanks to some outstanding saves by Sophomore goalie Noah Roelofs who had 11 saves at the end of the night. Other notable efforts came from Sophomore Peter Barnsdale who changed positions to the Midfield and helped strengthen the team’s offense. Efforts from Freshman Nick Vander Stelt and Sophomore Sedekie Jabateh also gave Pumas a great chance to win. However, Algoma’s goalie recorded the shutout as the Pumas were unable to tie the score. Total shots ended at 12-11 in favor of Algoma. Head Coach Randy Basinger had this to say after the game. “My team played their best game and I could not be more proud of their effort, focus, and character. It has been a tough season but that comes when you have many young players. The team remains in high spirits and focused. Although we hear often that the future is bright, we still are ready to keep improving and make some noise at the end of the season.” The Pumas will have a rematch Friday night in Algoma Christian for a 5:00pm start time.

JV Volleyball Holds Their Own @ Class B Tournament

The JV volleyball team traveled to Hastings High School on Saturday, September 17th to play in a JV invitational tournament. The young Pumas have been experiencing a high level of success, and went in looking for a challenge at Hastings. A challenge is just what they got! The other three teams in the tournament were Class B teams, two MHSAA classifications above the Pumas. Our girls started out against the host Saxons, and played a good match, only to fall in two close sets. Next up was Godwin Heights, and the Pumas were up to the challenge, splitting the two sets with the Wolverines, and making known that they could play with any team there! Next up was West Catholic. The Falcons won two straight over our Pumas, placing them in the consolation finals against that same Godwin Heights team they had played earlier. There were no splits in the minds of your hard fighting Pumas, and they quickly dispatched the Wolverines in two sets to give them a third place finish in the tournament. Coach Dewey said of the effort, “We had a little bit of an up and down day, but the girls stepped up to the challenges they faced today admirably. When you play up like this, the difference in winning or not is in who is able to play with the most consistency. We played a very scrappy style of volleyball today, and stood up well for ourselves. We just have to keep that style of play throughout the sets to beat these bigger teams. I have no doubt that this group of athletes will demonstrate that regularly as they go through the program.”

The JV Pumas next match is at home on Tuesday when they face conference member Algoma Christian in a JV & Varsity double header starting at 5:00pm.

The Pumas were defeated 4-1, giving them a 1-8 overall record, and a 1-4 Alliance conference record. The defense, anchored by the emerging leader, Sophomore Devon Vanderlaan, was able to hold off much of the attack. Fruitport was able to finally break past the defense and finish an opportunity to tie the game at half. In the second half, the Pumas once again put Calvary on their heels. Freshmen Nick Vander Stelt was able to put a lot of pressure on Fruitport’s defense. However, in the end Fruitport Calvary finished on an opportunity ending the game with a 2-1 score. Coach Basinger stated after the game, “I am still amazed at these guys’ character and spirits as they remain strong. Freshman Nick Vander Stelt had a great shot early in the game that barely missed, hitting the corner of the crossbar. Tri-Unity responded by keeping the pressure on, but the Puma defense, which is improving drastically every game, was able to hold off the attacks. The Pumas were able to get on the scoreboard first when Vander Stelt broke free and found the back of the net. The Pumas held the lead most of the game until Tri-Unity scored twenty minutes into the second half. With 15 minutes left in the game, Tri-Unity was scored on a PK after a tripping penalty in the box, giving them a 2-1 lead. The young Puma team responded with a quick goal off Vander Stelt‘s foot and a great assist by fellow freshman Sam Jansen. However, it was not to be for the young Pumas as Tri Unity was able to put a goal in the back of the net with under five minutes to go. Sophomore goalkeeper Noah Roelofs had another strong game with 8 saves. The Pumas stay strong in spirit and know that with hard work, success will come. Look to watch the Pumas try and improve to 2-1 in Conference play Friday vs Holland Black River @ 5:15 pm at Jackson Park Middle School.

Soccer Second Half Comeback Falls Short @ Grand River Prep

The Boys Varsity Soccer team (0-4) traveled to Kentwood on Tuesday, August 30th to take on Grand River Prep, falling 7-3. The Pumas had a rough start to this game digging their selves a hole to start the game. Grand River Prep had many offensive weapons and they took advantage of the slow start by the Pumas by putting in some goals right off the bat. Grand River Prep jumped out to an early 4-0 lead that put the Pumas in catch-up mode for the rest of the game. The Pumas responded with a header from Freshmen Sam Jansen off of a free kick by Senior Captain Gamaliel Garcia. However, Grand River Prep answered with a quick goal of their own to push the lead to 5 to 1 just before the half.

To start the second half Grand River Prep answered quickly with a goal in the first minute. Once again, the Pumas responded and Sam Jansen scored his second goal of the game with a hard left footed strike. The Pumas put another goal in the back of the net thanks to senior Captain Gamaliel Garcia who was able to break past the defense and slide it into the corner. In the end the Pumas lost 7 to 3 but given their tough start to the game, they were able to bounce back and more importantly play to the last whistle. Come support the Pumas as they travel to conference rival Zion Christian on Thursday, September 1st for a 4:30pm game.

Puma Soccer Fights Hard in Loss to Lee HS

The Pumas hosted their first game on Saturday, August 27th, falling to neighboring Wyoming Lee HS 5-2. The Pumas came out eager to play and ready to defend their home field. The Lee Rebels got on the scoreboard half way through the first half, making it 1-0. However, PH quickly answered when freshmen Sam Jansen was able to play a wonderfully placed cross to fellow standout freshman Nick Vander Stelt, who put it in the back of the net to tie it at 1-1. At halftime the score remained 1 to 1. The Rebels grabbed the lead early in the second half when they once again found the back of the net to go up by one. But once again, The Potter’s House answered another cross from Freshmen Sam Jansen to the head of Sophomore Sedekie Jabateh, who scored his second goal of the season. In the end the Pumas out shot Wyoming Lee 16 to 14 but unfortunately, five of the Pumas shots hit the crossbar in this game while the visiting Lee Rebels were able to finish their chances to take a 5 to 2 victory. Come support the Pumas in their next match as they travel to Grand River Prep this Tuesday, August 30th at 5:00pm

Volleyball Shows Improvement at Watervliet Tourney

On Saturday, August 27th, the Varsity Volleyball team traveled south to Watervliet to play in the Janet Kucharski Memorial Tournament. TPH faced Lawrence, Bridgman, Grace Christian, and Black River in the tournament. Unfortunately, the Pumas were unable to bring home any wins for the day. Coach Ken Dewey remarked that “The teams we faced today were all very well rounded, polished teams. They had no particular weaknesses, which is challenging for us because we are still learning, and gaining valuable court experience with this team.” The spirit of the day was evident, though, when the coach added “This event is a great example of what we are about at The Potter’s House. Our team plays for the glory of Jesus Christ in our lives, and this tournament is centered on raising our hearts and hands for His glory in tribute to Janet Kucharski. We didn’t win today on the court, although we DID have a very fun match with Black River, but we were able to spend valuable time together in the name of the Father, and work through our inexperience in nurturing ways.” The Pumas varsity volleyball team was led this week by a strong performance by Junior Kristy Guevara with 4 kills and 5 aces. Guevara was joined by Senior Mayra Hernandez and Junior Chloe Malmquist with 5 assists each. This week sees TPH open their home schedule on Tuesday, August 30th against neighbor Covenant Christian. The JV match begins at 5:00pm, with the varsity following at 6:00.

Volleyball Faces Tough Competition in NorthPointe Tourney

On Tuesday, August 23rd, the Varsity Volleyball team headed a little north to the NorthPointe Christian tournament. The Pumas faced Grand River Prep, Kalamazoo Heritage Christian, WMCAA (West Michigan Christian Athletic Association), and Zion Christian. In the end, TPH fell in all four matches. Coach Dewey remarked at the end of the tournament “We have a team of extremely good girls, who are, unfortunately, short on experience at the Varsity level. We faced some very strong serving teams, and we have to be better in moving and communicating in that area. As the girls gain time on the court, they will improve. They are of high character, know what they want to accomplish, but don’t have the number of reps touching a volleyball that a more experienced team might at this point.” He continued “I have no doubt that this team will be surprising people at the end of the season with how they are picking the finer points of the game up.” The Pumas travel to Watervliet on Saturday, August 27th for a tournament. Come out and support the Pumas!

Varsity Soccer falls 1-0 in Conference Opener

The Pumas Boys Varsity Soccer team traveled to Holland on Tuesday, August 23 to take on conference rival Holland Calvary in a rematch of last fall’s State Regional Semifinal matchup, falling 1-0. The loss puts the Pumas at 0-2 on the season (0-1 in the Alliance Conference). The game started out as a back and forth game much of the first half. With less than five minutes to go in the first half, Holland Calvary found a way to sneak in a goal past the Puma defense in a surprise fast break to take the halftime lead. After some half-time adjustments the Pumas came out firing in the second half. The Pumas were on the attack and had possession for most of the second half, putting several shots on or near the goal. Unfortunately, they were not able to finish on their offensive chances. Sophomore goalie Noah Roelofs stood out for the Pumas and played another solid game in net with 10 big saves, including a crucial save in a one-on-one situation in the second half. As the Calvary player got behind the Puma defense, Roelofs came out of the net and put pressure on the offensive player; he then made a great save diving to his left as he ran full speed at the Crusader. It is plays like these that get Head Coach Randy Basinger excited about his young Varsity team’s potential. Despite the tough conference loss, the Pumas understand it is a young season and are ready to continue to work hard in practice to improve. Their next game is this Saturday vs. Lee High School. It is the team’s first home game and will be held at Jackson Park at 11:30am. Come and support the Pumas!

Volleyball Starts Day Quiet, Ends With Loud Message

The Varsity Volleyball team started the 2011 campaign on Friday, August 19, 2011, at the Cornerstone University Golden Eagles Invitational. They started the day a bit slowly, dropping their first two matches of the season to Fruitport Calvary Christian (16-25, 9-25), and eventual tournament champion Lakeview HS (8-25, 7-25). The Lady Pumas then finished their pool strong, by defeating Pentwater HS (25-13, 25-12). This placed TPH third in their pool and the top seed in the silver division of the tournament. After defeating Pentwater for a second time in the semi-finals (25-18, 25-8), the Lady Pumas dropped the final match of the day to league rival West Michigan Lutheran (25-23, 18-25, 14-16). Coach Ken Dewey, in his first year of coaching at TPH, said of the tournament: “We had a bit of a slow start today, but we proved in the end that if you want to beat these Pumas, you will have your hands full.” He added, “We had a good day serving the ball, but need to improve our offense and defense before we can make a run at the conference. Having had only 1-1/2 weeks of practice, I think we made a great showing in this tournament. We dropped two matches to start, then fought our way back to the division final. We are playing with the theme ‘In His name’ this season. This group has already shown that God’s glory will be shown by their efforts. I look forward to seeing how much their play grows as that message grows into their everyday habits.” The Potter’s House was led on the day by Kayla Ehmke with 9 kills and a .304 hitting percentage, Sarah Jawara with 9 Aces, Myra Hernandez with 7 assists and a .250 assist percentage, and Kristy Guevara with 6 blocks. Myra Hernandez also led the team with a 91% serving performance. Soccer Falls in Opener @ Freedom Christian

The Pumas Boys Varsity Soccer team started their season off at Freedom Christian on Friday, August 19th. The Pumas Varsity team has a mix of senior players along with many young underclassmen. However, the Pumas fought right back and sophomore Sedekie Jabateh scored the first goal of the season to make it 2-1. Following the goal, the Pumas dominated play leading to a free kick that nearly snuck in to tie the game before the half. The Pumas played well in the second half, keeping it close, still down only one with 20 minutes to go. Unfortunately due to a few injuries and having only two subs, the Pumas seemed to run out of gas. The team played very well as a unit and they are excited about improving throughout the season and defending their conference championship. They will start that defense next Tuesday, August 23 at Holland Calvary at 5:00 p.m.
